The collection primarily documents activities of South End House but also includes records of the South Bay Sorosis and incidental records for related Boston and national social welfare organizations. There is little personal material for Woods present, with the exception of some drafts of his writings on the settlement movement and broader social conditions. Types of material present include correspondence, essays, financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, and print.

Part of a national settlement house movement during the Progressive Era in America, the South End House opened its doors in Boston, Massachusetts, as the Andover House in 1891. Its founder, Dr. William J. Tucker, was a Congregational minister and social reformer who taught at the Andover Theological Seminary located in Andover, Massachusetts. Tucker, William Jewett, 1839-1926

William Jewett Tucker was the ninth president of Dartmouth College; he served in that capacity from 1893 to 1909. He was born in Griswold, Conn. in 1839. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1861 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1866. In 1875 he received his DD. He was a trustee of Dartmouth College from 1878 to 1909.
